17 Acre Culinary District Planned For Fishers
Currently, when compared to other neighborhoods in the Indianapolis area, Fishers isn't exactly known for its culinary options. The city is well aware that it is lacking options in this area, and it hopes to makes some improvements by constructing The Yard, a 17-acre culinary district. The district is still in the planning stages, but it should open in Spring 2019.
Most Fishers residents complain that the city does not have enough local culinary options. The city seems to be dominated by national chains and fast food restaurants. The Yard is the city's attempt to change this. While the future occupants of The Yard have yet to be determined, a total of 18 restaurants are expected to occupy its 17 acres. Fishers is attempting to bring a mixture of chain and local restaurants to the area. Restaurants will have both a casual and a sit-down atmosphere. Many of the restaurants will focus on appealing to lunchtime visitors. The area is close to many businesses with a large number of employees.
Perhaps the most unique planned feature for district, Fishers is planning to add “incubator” spaces in The Yard. These spaces are designed to welcome restaurants startups. While the “incubator” space is still being figured out, Fishers does expect to dedicate up to 3,000 square feet of space to this unique area of The Yard, and it will resemble Indianapolis' City Market. Renters will only have to pay $1.00 per year to occupy space in the “incubator” space. In the end, the area will be designed to help prospective restaurants get some space to call their own and grow.
While The Yard is designed with the culinary industry in mind, there are some other plans for the area. For one, a 200-room area will eventually occupy some space at The Yard. There is also some talk that a theater may eventually pop up in The Yard as well. Most buildings in The Yard will also have multiple floors. While restaurants are planned to occupy the lower floors of these multi-floor buildings, office space will be available in the upper floors.
The Yard will occupy a 17-acre tract of land just east of the 116th Street exit off of I-69. It will be right in the middle of I-69 and Cumberland Road on 116th Street. Located on the south side of 116th Street, it will be close to IKEA, Top Golf and many other significant Fishers landmarks.
