For those familiar with it, visiting IKEA is an unforgettable experience because there is truly nothing else out there like it. Unfortunately, currently, if you are an Indianapolis-area resident you must drive to a neighboring state if you want to visit an IKEA store. However, by the end of this year, this will no longer be the case. The megastore corporation plans to open a store in Fishers near I-69 and East 116th Street.

IKEA is a home goods store that is designed for people of all walks of life. It is named after its founder, Ingvar Kamprad, and the farms and village, Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, respectively, where he was raised. While most Americans are probably familiar with IKEA’s presence in the United States, the company has locations across the world. Places as far away as Indonesia and Kuwait have IKEA stores. While IKEA has been in existence for multiple decades, its model really has not changed much since 1967. It strives to provide quality and fashionable home goods for low prices.

IKEA Fishers Construction

Currently, anyone living in the Indianapolis area is required to travel as far as Chicago, Cincinnati or St. Louis to have an IKEA experience. Currently, it is estimated that as many as 185,000 people in the Indianapolis area have been IKEA customers. Due to the demand it has presented among Central Indiana residents, IKEA planned years ago to open up a location in the Indianapolis area. Construction on a Fishers facility has already begun. The ground-breaking ceremony was last year in October. Currently, the Fishers location is on track to open in the fall of 2017. To ensure the store will be ready for its opening this fall, IKEA hired contractors to begin constructing the facility’s furniture. While the store itself will be great for the local economy, its construction also created an additional 500 construction jobs. From ground-breaking to completion, this IKEA location will cost around $40 million. The facility will occupy 35 acres of land just southeast of I-69 and East 116th Street.

IKEA Fishers at Opening

IKEA Fishers will employ approximately 250 people, and it will be about 289,000 square feet in size upon completion. It will have 50 rooms containing home goods and a 325-seat restaurant. Like other IKEA locations, the Fishers IKEA will serve Swedish entrees. This location will hire employees for sales, accounting and food preparation. IKEA plans to start listing this jobs this spring. Indianapolis residents interested in working at the Fishers IKEA location should keep an eye on the IKEA website. It will have a career area that will undoubtedly have information about employment at the Fishers locations.
