Indianapolis Zoo ZooBoo
With 250 animal species and over 2,000 varieties of plants, the Indianapolis Zoo is the largest and best zoo in Indianapolis. The zoo is divided into five areas. These areas are the oceans, the plains, the deserts, the encounters and the forests. During the fall months, the Indianapolis Zoo comes alive with ZooBoo, a series of Halloween-themed days. There are many activities and special considerations for ZooBoo.
Planning a Visit to the Zoo
Zoo admission varies with the time of the year and the day of the week. Tickets are cheaper online, however, so it is recommended to print tickets at home. Online tickets generally run between $15.00 and $20.00 for adults. Kid tickets and senior tickets are slightly cheaper than adult tickets. There are two standard admission types. The Standard Admission Package grants access to all public zoo areas, the gardens and zoo shows. The Total Adventure Package, the other admission type offered by the zoo, gives visitors access to zoo rides and animal feeds in addition to all the perks offered by the Standard Admission Package.
There are a number of events that occur in addition to regular zoo activities during ZooBoo. Visitors can watch elephants smash pumpkins at 3:00pm. Brown Bears bob for apples at 5:30pm on ZooBoo days. The regular dolphin shows have a Halloween theme during ZooBoo, and they are held at 2:30pm and 4:30pm. The All-Star Dog Challenge is another ZooBoo event. It is held three times per day during ZooBoo. Visitors can check out this show at 3:00pm, 5:00pm and 6:30pm. Guests can also enjoy the Spooktacular Train Ride, the “Round-Go-Merry,” and the “Roller Ghoster” during ZooBoo. These attractions are not included with zoo admission.
Typically, the zoo is least busy before noon. It can get very busy immediately after lunch, especially if it is a nice day. It may be a good idea to do non-ZooBoo events before noon when crowds are smaller. For ZooBoo, kids are encouraged to bring a reusable bag for trick-or-treating. Kids 12 and under are also encouraged to dress up in a costume. For the safety of all zoo patrons, adults are not allowed to wear masks or makeup that excessively covers their face.
