Construction has begun for one of the largest transit projects in Indianapolis history - the Red Line project. The construction delays are hard to miss, but the convenience of buses arriving at their stops every 10 minutes, for 20 hours a day, and 7 days a week is highly anticipated among Indianapolis residents.

The Red Line is slated to be up and running by Summer 2019. Connecting Broad Ripple to Downtown to Fountain Square to the University of Indianapolis, this long-awaited transit update is finally bringing reliable public transit options into Indianapolis. As Indianapolis continues to grow and more large corporations make their homes here, reliable public transit becomes more of a necessity.

According to research by IndyGo, reliable public transit leads to lower unemployment rates and lower employee turnover. Also, almost all of the neighborhoods connected on the Red Line were once served by the old Indianapolis streetcar system. The Red Line will also be the first all-electric rapid transit line in the U.S. These buses will have interior bike storage, their own dedicated traffic lanes, and will also be fully accessible by ADA standards. Canopied stations with real-time arrival information and ticket vending machines are planned to keep the bus system convenient for riders.

The long term impacts are yet to be determined for the Red Line project, but this system update is long overdue. As far as public transit in large cities goes, Indianapolis has been behind the ball for many years. The Red Line project aims to replace infrequent and unreliable bus service in some of Indianapolis’ most trafficked areas. Once completely implemented, riders will have more reliable access to over 100,000 jobs, hospitals, more cultural hotspots, and residential neighborhoods.

How do you feel about public transit in Indianapolis? Is the Red Line something that you or your family would use?
