The Story Behind Indys Northern Suburbs
Alongside the plentiful subdivisions, great schools, and more space that living in one Indianapolis’ north suburbs provides, there’s also a great deal of local history! Most of these sprawling suburbs have some exciting tales in their history that shape the stories of their existence today.
Westfield - This popular community for families was started by Quakers and incorporated as a town in 1849. It is believed that the town was a planned stop on the Underground Railroad. There are still a few privately-owned homes in the area that are believed to have been stops for escaped slaves traveling north. In 2008, Westfield was incorporated as a city and is now home to almost 40,000 people.
Noblesville - Serving as the county seat of Hamilton County, Noblesville has an estimated population of 56,000 people. What was once unsettled land bought from the Delaware Indians, Noblesville’s downtown and business districts are now on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic prison once held some prominent figures from our past such as Charles Manson.
Zionsville - This Boone County village hovers just near the edge of Marion and Hamilton counties. Founded in 1852, Zionsville was once home to a stop on the historic Interurban Railroad - taking passengers directly to and from downtown Indianapolis. What was once a small village has become home to one of the top 5 school districts in the state and is Tree City USA community, recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation.
Fishers - With families flocking to the suburbs, Fishers has grown exponentially in recent years - to almost 100,000 residents. Home to the first trading post in Central Indiana, built by William Conner, this community is also home to Geist Reservoir and over 85 miles of trails & greenways.
Carmel - In 1837, prior to being named Carmel, the area was known as Bethlehem and only contained 14 plots of land. Now, the city sprawls much further to accommodate almost 95,000 residents. The town officially became Carmel in 1847 and was the first place in the USA to have automatic stop-and-go traffic signals. The Carmel Clay School System is consistently ranked as the best in the state.
