Toboggan Run At Pokagon State Park

While snow fights and snow forts can certainly be fun for the kids, eventually they are going want to mix it up this winter. Northsiders looking for another fun outdoor activity during the winter months should check out the toboggan run at Pokagon State Park in Angola, Indiana. In existence for 80 years, the toboggan run is one of the most unique features in all of Indiana’s state parks.

The Run

The toboggan run at Pokagon State Park takes about 20 to 30 seconds to complete in total. From the top of the 30-foot tower, riders will drop about 90 feet, and they will be whisked along for about a quarter of a mile. While speed can certainly vary per rider, the record top speed attained on this run is 42 miles per hour. While the beginning of the ride has a steep drop, the run rises and drops at various points. In total, about 90,000 people attend Pokagon State Park each year just to try out its toboggan run.


Toboggan sleds can be rented for just $13.00 per hour. Each sled holds four people, and cash, checks and credit cards are all accepted for payment. On Fridays, three toboggans can be rented for the normal price of two. Anyone attending the toboggan run will also have to pay the park entry fee. It is $7.00 per instate vehicle. Out-of-state vehicles must pay $9.00.


Anyone visiting the toboggan run from out of town should consider staying at The Potawatomi Inn Resort and Conference Center, Pokagon State Park’s inn. It has a full-service restaurant, 137 rooms and a banquet hall and conference center perfect for large groups.


The toboggan run is located at Pokagon State Park, which is Angola, Indiana, in the northeastern part of the state. Northsiders planning on taking a trip up to the toboggan run may want to consider spending the night. However, a trip up there can be done in one day. In total, Northsiders should anticipate about five hours of travel roundtrip.

The toboggan run at Pokagon State Park is only open during the winter. For the 2016-2017 winter season, it officially opened on November 25th. It will close on February 26th, 2017. The toboggan run is open regardless of snow presence. The run is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. On Fridays, it is open between 5:30pm and 9:00pm. On Saturdays, it is open for over 11 hours, opening at 10:30am and closing at 9:00pm. On Sundays, it is open between the hours of 11:00am and 5:00pm. The run will be open on Martin Luther King Day and Presidents’ Day in 2017 as well. The toboggan run will not be open if the air temperature drops below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
